BETWEEN THE SEA AND MEMORY

I come from Syktyvkar, in the Komi Republic — a place with no sea, where surfing once felt like something belonging to an entirely different life.

When I first fell in love with surfing, there was no sea outside my window, not even a chance to experience real surfing. All I had was a dream and an overwhelming desire to catch a real wave someday.

Eventually, I found myself on the Baltic Sea. There are no endless ocean swells here. The waves often arrive with the wind, and sometimes you wait weeks for a decent forecast. But somewhere in that unpredictability, I found something that felt strangely familiar.

Photography became another way for me to express things I couldn’t quite put into words. I’ve always been drawn to old photographs, soft edges, imperfect images, and that peculiar feeling of remembering a moment you’ve never actually lived.

My work brings together pictorialism, vintage aesthetics, dreamcore, and contemporary surf culture. I’m less interested in simply documenting what happens than in preserving how it feels — the way someone exists beside the sea, the way light dissolves into water, or how an ordinary moment slowly becomes a memory.

My photographs are about people who keep searching for waves where hardly anyone expects to find them. About the beauty of imperfection, freedom, and that strange attachment to the sea that’s difficult to explain to someone who has never stood on a surfboard.

My practice includes exhibitions, museum projects, photographic publications, and my artist photobook The Baltic Breakwaters.

Perhaps I’m not really photographing the sea itself, but what it leaves behind in us.
